Comments: Great to see a website devoted to the Bynum area. I had planned on developing a similar site. I went to Bynum Elem. School and grew up in Bynum Baptist Church. I still think Bynum is a good place to raise kids. Thats why I just finished building my house in Bynum. The community has changed so much just in my life time and much more from hearing the stories from my parents and grandparents who also grew up in Bynum. My father (Don Burns) set his priorities in order of God, Family, Country, & Bynum. As you might know the old school has been closed and is currently only used for voting polls. I have met with Oxford's Parks & Rec Department and the main school building is scheduled to be demolished to build a community center. I thought if any one wanted to plan a Bynum reunion that that would be a good time to do it. Everyone could take back a brick of the building as a momento. Just throwing out an idea.

Comments: I moved to Bynum in December 1945 and lived there until I married in 1958. Those were some of the best years of my life. I remember the train that came through every night and shook the ground of our first apartment. Then we moved to apt 119-120 and it was there that Jean Watson and I cut a hole between our bedroom walls with a kitchen table knife and I played in the cemetery with Peggy Patjens. I can still taste her mother's cornbread. It was the best in the world. I remember the long walks to the lake to swim and teen-age and learning to drive on Coldwater Road. Back in March at a 1956 class dinner at Top of the River these are the things Geary Coogler, Barbara Murray and I talked about and now we are mourning the loss of Geary. This was a special time in the lives of all who were priviledged to have lived there.

Comments: A fellow I used to date who also lived in Bynum, Donald Dalton Johnson, told me about this website. How interesting! I think I attend the elementary school from 4th to 6th grades, then went to Oxford HS for 7th to 9th grades. I think we lived in the Alan Homes development, house number may have been 30 something, near a bend, not far from the end/exit of Alan Homes, not far from where Donny Johnson lived. My stepfather's last name was Pettit, my mother's name was Edith. We had a white German Shepherd dog. Our house was on the left hand side of the road. I remember riding my bicycle down the horseshoe in the development, Halloween parties at the center, being in a Thanksgiving play at the elementary school, walking to school each day, attending the Baptist church, getting stung by a large bumble bee on my knee while riding my bicycle. I remember a Hilda that lived in the development. Another Johnson family had fig trees in their yard. I don't really recall anything !
else. It was also an unpleasant momentus time in my life. If there is anyone who remembers me, please have them contact me. I seem to recall Juanita Pratt but not absolutely positive. I get to the Anniston/Jacksonville area about every year or two. I plan to be in Alabama again in 2010 for my 45th class reunion, OHS. Oh, how those years have flown.

I lived there; DeSoto Manor, then Allen Homes, until 1970, when my wife, Patsy (Franklin), daughter, Jennifer, and son, Jeffrey (on the way), moved away. Comments: Great website! I went to Bynum Elementary from 1st - 6th grades. Started working there as Title 1 Assistant in 1986. After they closed Bynum I went back there and worked 4 more years when it was the Alternative School. It is so sad to see it the way it looks now. It was a great little school and community.

Comments: Father was Col Mhoon and was stationed at the depot. We lived on the hill at the depot. He retired. We moved to Terrace Homes. He owned and operated the PanAm station on the highway. Most of our customers were Bynum residents. We left Bynum in the summer of 1959. Those were all wonderful years. I was lifeguard at the Bynum kiddies pool by the library for two years. Everybody knew everybody - there were no locked houses and we walked everywhere. A time in my life I have fond memories of.

Comments: My childhood in Bynum I wouldn't trade for anything. Riding my bike wherever I wanted without a care in the world, Singing in the choir, swimming in the depot pool, those were the days. Got married in 1990, rented my old neighborhood house from my dad, had 2 kids there, and lived there another 3 years. Really miss the place.

Comments: I had 2 brothers, Joe and Jim. They both live in Florida, too, as does my sister Grace. I went to Bynum Baptist and then the Methodist church. I went to Bynum Elem for the 5th and 6th grades. Wilford Land, Johnny Owens, and Karen Bean were in my class. We lived in DeSoto Manor until they closed it, then we moved to Eulaton for a while until we moved to Oxford. After I married, I moved back to Bynum for a short time in Terrace Homes. It was there that I promised my wife we would never be without air conditioning again!! What a trip down memory lane it has been to see and read this site!! I recently ran across a picture of my family (Granny, Pop, and the 3 boys) standing on the Depot sign. I went to high school with Patsy Franklin Kinsaul and worked at the Depot for Duane's father, Sam Kinsaul.
