This is the song I played to close out the reunion. When it first come out, it was played in the movie, Patch Adams. It grabbed my soul when I first hear it. This song embodies the essence of our generation.
We never quit. We never stop progressing. We can do anything we set our minds to.
Once upon a time, there was a community full of caring folks, for the most part, and those that were not caring were smiled at anyway. These folks, as is the way with most folks, aged most gracefully. These people lived in a tight-knit community and knew one another’s happiness and one another’s problems and were family, most certainly. I against my better judgment moved from this community at age 14, simply because my parents moved. Can you believe that? But, I left my heart there, with my friends at church and school and play. My heart is still there, somewhat scarred but whole, nevertheless. I did not know why my parents moved and they never told me. A friend of theirs later said they moved so I would have a bigger pond to fish in to find a husband. Well, there was husband material all around me in our community!
It was not until much later that I realized it was not necessarily the community that I hurt and longed for, it was the people I pined for and missed.
Time unfolded and many of the special people drifted apart to make their own way, to bring up their own children and life happened as it so often does. Fast forward 50 years with the advent of the internet. We of the no-television era could not in our wildest have dreamed about communicating with people all over the entire world and outer space, too, in the form of space stations. One of the kind men who grew up at Bynum was especially skilled in computers and he graciously started a web site for all the Bynum kids. Finally, we were able to find people we thought were lost forever, those who married, changed their names, moved away. This was a miracle. We Bynum people started communicating with one another through this web site. Some of the folks had been seeing one another and visiting regularly, with a small “reunion” every once in a while. These same people realized that time was getting shorter and people were leaving this plane, so it became apparent that we HAD to have a reunion before any one else left permanently.
What with the web site and the ones who had been reunioning regularly, the idea of a reunion for all of us Bynum kids caught the fancy of all of us. We were able to gather names easily for the reunion, and do all this gathering on the web site which had been constructed just for us by one of us. Granted, much, much planning went into the reunion by the reunion committee, to whom we are eternally grateful. The reunion committee was made up of sons and daughters of Bynum, just as we were sons and daughters. Without this planning, this reunion would not have happened. This reunion became a reality in May 2010. We were not disappointed, to say the least. Just looking on faces of people I last saw in 1959 when we moved away, was joy in my soul and my scarred heart felt new again. These are people I will love for my entire life and beyond. They do not know how important they have been in my reality and in dreams, too. I believe we are all important to one another and would have been so much the poorer without the place where we grew up. Our memories are rich, even as we were not, but I would not trade money for the life we shared in our shining community.
