Funeral service for Mr. Wilford Jones Lane will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015, at St. Michael's and all Angels with Minster Ryan Robertson officiating. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Alabama National Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church. Mr. Lane passed away Thursday at RMC. Survivors include his wife, Amy Lane; children, Joshua Jones Lane (Jennifer), John Roberts Lane (Neren) and Emily Brown (Jason); grandchildren, Sarah Lane, Joseph Lane, Brittney Brown and Krystal Brown; mother, Gertrude Lane and sister, Hilda Lane Butler. Mr. Lane is preceded in death by his father, Ernest Lane; sister, Judy Lane Brasher. Pallbearers will be Jason Brown, Bobby McDowell, James J. Taylor, Robert Moore, Declan Foy, Hank Leucken. Honorary pallbearers will be the Calhoun-Cleburne Bar Association and the Alabama Elks. Mr. Lane graduated from Oxford High School, Jacksonville State University and Birmingham School of Law. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran. Mr. Lane has been a member of the Calhoun-Cleburne Bar Association since 1978. He was the current president of the Alabama Elks Association and past Exalted Ruler of Anniston Elks Lodge No. 189. He was also a life member of the Bynum American Legion Post No. 155, the VFW and the Moose Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anniston Elks Lodge Scholarship Fund, P.O. Michael "Mike" Maurice McKendree, 60, of Dahlonega died Monday.
Graveside service, 11 a.m. Thursday, Forest Lawn Gardens, Anniston, Ala. Little & Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville.
Please keep Ronnie (his brother) in your prayers along with Mike's family. if you can attend the graveside please come. I am going to be sharing words of comfort and encouragement to these dear Bynum Kid families.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. CST, Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Forest Lawn Gardens, Anniston, AL for Mr. Michael “Mike” Maurice McKendree, 60, of Dahlonega, who passed away on Monday, May 7th following an extended illness. Rev. Bill Caudle will officiate.
Born on May 28, 1951, in Anniston, AL, he was the son of the late Roland and Glanca McKendree. He was employed as a builder/developer. He was a loving husband father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Milton McKendree.
Mr. McKendree is survived by his wife, Debbie McKendree of Dahlonega, sons, Dustin McKendree of Auburn, AL, Derek McKendree of Dahlonega; grandson, Dakotah McKendree of Dahlonega; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Sheri McKendree of Columbus, GA; aunt, Vee Dyer Doyle of Dahlonega and several nieces and nephews.
New Bynum Community Center at the old Bynum School The Anniston Star
For those of you that have left the Bynum area and not returned in many years, you probably would not recognize your old home town!
Hot Holmes old home place and store have been completely demolished. In their place is a sprawling new industry known as "Kyrospan". This is a huge complex that replaced the beautiful old pastures and woods that were part of the Holmes' property. It is so sad to see these stark, utilitarian buildings replacing the beautiful lcountry andscape that used to line highway 202. I don't have photos, but maybe someone else can contribute before and after photos showing the drastic change that "Progress" has produced in the little community of Bynum. Further construction is now being done along 202, which we have been told is to make 202 a four-lane highway.
Joe Rumore (born; July 14, 1920 Birmingham AL) has been called Alabama's premiere radio personality for more than forty years. He began his radio career at WJLD, Bessemer AL. Rumore then worked at WAPI Birmingham AL (1941-1948) before joining WVOK, the Mighty 690, with 50,000 watts of power that was able to reach north and central Alabama as well as parts of Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia (1948-1982). In rural areas, WVOK was the only radio station many people could receive. At one point was also on WBAM, Montgomery AL via tape. For most of his career he had a studio in his home and broadcast from his basement, making his family and delivery persons part of the show.. He was never a station employee, but bought the time from the station and sold his own advertising. He was known for playing a variety of music and was quoted in the Birmingham News "I could play Ray Price "For The Good Times and then turn right around and play Tony Bennett" He retired from radio in 1982. Rumore died on December 20, 1993 after bypass surgery. Joe Rumore was inducted into the Country Music D J Hall of Fame in 1999.

The Talent Shows at the Theater

Let me begin by saying that I don’t remember how often these were done. I just remember they were always fun. I especially recall how it was a part of our family. Years after my Dad’s participation I ask him how he did one of his parts of his talent presentation. He lovingly said. "You want me to give away my secret to eating a lighted cigarette?" Of course he went on to reveal that he really did not eat a real cigarette, and it was a candy cigarette! Do you remember how easily those were sold back in our childhood? You know dad could still walk forward and backwards on his hands for many years. I also recalled him jumping forwards and backwards over a broom stick. I am so glad that our parents did things like the talent shows to help us have the life we had at Bynum. Hopefully we all learned those great lessons of giving to the community for the good of the community because the talent show I recall being a part of the school life.
Another small memory

We always enjoyed flying kites. There were those we purchased at Woolworth’s in Anniston or those we made ourselves. Well one March after we moved to Allan Homes. Mom and Dad helped us build an unusual large kite. As I recall, it was least 3 x 5 ft in size. We tied a lengthy tail on it and them Dad gave us a rather extra ordinary roll of string (green and strong}to fly the kite. Several of the youngsters gathered in the street below the house to launch the kite. Up it went in the air to the East. Up over the homes it flew somewhat toward Desota Manor, a little to the east, like toward the Carr’s, over the McKendree’s and beyond. Suddenly we ran out of string and it began to fall. We all grabbed our bikes and followed its fall. We went through the Manor to opposite side of AOD entrance (Beck Rd) and saw it fall into a pine tree on the hill just beyond the road. At that point we were disappointed not to be able to retrieve the largest kite we had ever flown but realized that we had flown a kite a greater distance than ever before. To this day when I attempt to fly a kite or see a kite being flown or even see a kite for sale in WalMart I remember that afternoon in Bynum years ago. What a Memory to have of family and friends.
