The 100 Chicks For $1.98 From WCKY Cincinnati 1 Ohio and
Bynum Post Office....in the 1950's.
By Sandra Jean Wheeler Allen
The post office was next door to the community center. My best recollection of the Post Office was when Mr Anderson called my mama’s beauty shop and said Myrt we have a problem. Mama said what do you mean we have a problem. I have a package here for Sandra Jean. My mama said that was ok..Sandra is always saving her allowance to order things...He then proceeded to tell my mama that the package was making a sound...My mama said what do you mean making a sound...Mr Anderson said it is making a chirping sound...My mama said I will be right up there andI will bring Sandra Jean with me..meaning I was going to be in BIG trouble. Well while I watched mama and Mr Anderson open the box which had a bunch of holes in it. There were over 25 or more baby chicks that had hatched...and over 50 eggs with peck holes in them getting ready to hatch. God loved my mama at the time she didn't know a cuss word...but I still remember the screaming...seems my order to WCKY from Cincinnati 1 Ohio for a $1.98 had arrived. Well, needless to say I didn't get to keep the little baby chicks nor the hatching eggs that were bringing more baby chicks into the world. Thank goodness for Hot Holmes and his farm...a call went to him from my mama and the rest is history the man had a 100 free chicks that would grow and he would sell...and what did I get...well, let's just say I couldn't sit for a few days and I was not allowed to order anything else from the radio station WCKY Cincinnati 1 Oho, or from the Grit paper or anywhere else for that matter...but I still was able to collect my many varmints that ventured up to our apartment. Especially the Possum...( That is another story in itself.) That was unless I got caught before hand...I have a granddaughter who does the same thing...
Growing up at Bynum was the best years of my young life.
